Bre’s Story in her own words

Well, hello there, friends!

I'm Bre - also known as Metal BREtectorist.

Wife | Mom | Metal Detecting Addict | Geek | Dad Joke Enthusiast

If you walked into my home and took a look around, you would probably believe a 94-year-old woman lived there. Like a lot of you, I've always been drawn to old things.  From the antiques on my walls and shelves to the oxford shoes often on my feet, I've accepted that while I may have been born in the wrong era, I can still bring it to life and appreciate it every day.

Though I've been a treasure hunter of sorts for as long as I can remember, it was the beginning of 2023 when my adventure with metal detecting began.  Several months after dear granny Phoebe, The Phoebster, passed away, I was helping my family sort her belongings when I saw it - her old Whites machine. She didn't detect often, mostly just when she took the occasional trip to the beach, but she did enjoy. In that moment I had a mix of thoughts: I was bummed I never detected with her and also wondered why I had never thought about metal detecting since I loved other forms of treasure hunting so much.

I quickly found out her machine no longer worked (don't worry I still have it) and next thing I knew my mom sent me a Panky. Let me tell you what, even with that Panky and a pouch full of nails, I instantly knew this was "my thing". It just clicked - when ya know, ya know! I quickly upgraded machines and hit the ground running in this hobby and have been detecting , on average, three times a week - all year round - ever since.

I love everything about this hobby:  the thrill of the hunt, the research, being out in nature, adventuring to places I've never been before, getting my hands in the dirt, the community... and yes... the treasure!

Though I live and mostly detect in Washington State, I head east any chance I can get! In the last few years, I've adventured to detect with friends in Pennsylvania (twice), Massachusetts, Indiana and Utah. I look forward to continuing to detect across the country and dream of making it to Europe one of these days. Truth be told, I'm happy detecting anywhere. Of course it's more exciting in locations with richer history, but I believe each find is a time capsule and has a story to tell. So fellow West Coasters, don't get discouraged and don't let comparison be the thief of your joy, keeping you from doing what you love - saving history.

Treasure lies in the eye of the detectorist.

My treasures from detecting include colonial items, relics, early coins, tokens, old toys and more. If you ask me what my favorite find is - you won't be satisfied with my answer. I don't have a favorite. I love them all for many different reasons. When I look at my displayed finds, I'm transported back to the exact moment I found it - the feeling, the reaction, who I was with, the excitement, the banter - all of it.

If you'd like to follow along my adventures, you can find me on YouTube, TikTok and Facebook under Metal BREtectorist.

BREyond Metal Detecting:

When I'm not metal detecting, you'll find me spending time with my loved ones: my rock star husband, Tim, and my two turds - I mean kiddos, Jude and Veda.

I've been employed on the civilian side with the Department of Navy since 2012 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. I started my career as a Preservation Specialist sand blasting, needle gunning, painting, and spraying our navy vessels. I transitioned to other administrative positions within the command and at the end of 2019, I built a business case and proposal for a new program that I believe was needed throughout my career - something I wish was in place when I started - one that supports the people and humanizes the workplace experience in such an industrial environment..because life happens. In 2020, I stood up the Well-Being Program striving to increase individual and organizational well-being through various efforts. I'm a certified Life Coach, Well-Being Dynamics Specialist, and have obtained a Wellness Counseling Certification through Cornell University.  The Well-Being Program continues to thrive and grow beyond my wildest expectations.
