If you’ve watched Quarter Hoarder for any length of time, chances are you already know DogTag Doug.
A longtime member of the crew, Doug has been part of countless hunts, incredible discoveries, and more than a few unforgettable moments over the years. Here’s his story in his own words…
Doug’s Story
DogTag Doug isn’t just a nickname, it’s a state of mind. The character I portray on the Quarter Hoarder YouTube channel is actually the personification of my being. My life has been an ongoing commitment to attempting to make the people who come in contact with me happy. Putting smiles on faces is my constant endeavor. I try to be the antidote to the everyday miseries and problems we all face, even if only for a short period of time.
I’ve been married to my beautiful wife for almost 40 years and have been with her for almost 42. We have a blended family with a daughter and two sons from previous marriages, and they have blessed us with four beautiful grandchildren, two boys and two girls.
I grew up in North Carolina and have enjoyed fishing since childhood. I also began metal detecting in the early 1970s, when I had visions of becoming wealthy by finding and digging up buried treasure. Technology was simple then, which suited me, as I wouldn’t have grasped it any more then than I do now. All I really want to do is turn on the machine, swing it and hear a good signal worthy of digging.
Although I had been detecting since the 1970s, I didn’t really appreciate the full potential of the hobby until around 2016. By then, my fishing addiction was increasingly being stifled by government regulations and poor weather conditions that consistently kept the boats from leaving the dock.
As those situations became more common, my focus returned more frequently to metal detecting. YouTube gave me all the advice I needed to catch up on a hobby I had put on the back burner for a number of years.
I began looking forward every week to seeing the latest finds from the Hoover Boys, Aquachigger, PlugMaster Ford, Missouri Mike and, of course, Quarter Hoarder.
From being a weekly viewer, I knew where most of these favorites of mine were doing their hunting. All except one, Quarter Hoarder! He was as clandestine as they come, never giving a hint as to where his detecting was taking place.
Then one day I had an epiphany.
Having lived in New Jersey as long as I had, specifically South Jersey, I was quite aware of what New Jersey soil looked like, believe it or not. I jumped out of my chair, screaming to whoever was within earshot:
“He’s in New Jersey! That’s New Jersey dirt!” Again, that’s the honest-to-God truth!
That is when the stalking began.
I was determined to make contact with this guy and metal detect with him. I immediately began lining up properties I could use to lure him into my trap. Being a fisherman for so many years, I knew the best way to catch fish was with enticing bait.
My properties would be THAT bait!
They worked for all the aforementioned, they would work for him.
We finally got together and learned how to work together while building a successful friendship and the Quarter Hoarder YouTube channel.
There is no better person to bring out the essence of DogTag Doug than Quarter Hoarder himself, Jason.
His quick wit and repartee spoon-feed me not only the correct response, but the direction he wants the audience guided through my response.
I’m as confident in saying I contributed to the success of the Quarter Hoarder channel as Jason would be in saying he contributed to the notoriety of DogTag Doug, along with all the other caricatures of my personality he created!
My collection of good and harvested signals far surpasses what I ever dreamt I’d find. I may never find a material treasure from the ground, but I’ve reaped a treasure trove of friends and family through the simple hobby of metal detecting.
I can’t say how long I’ll physically be able to do what I do within this hobby, but I hope it’s many more years. I am certain I’ll get all the help and encouragement I need from Jason and the crew to keep on plugging along!
